About us

Lithuanian Society of Young Researchers (LSYR) is a dynamic knowledge-based autonomous non-political and non-profit nation-wide organisation, open to young researchers, scientists, and students from various science and research fields.

The organisation has been established on February 20, 2002 and officially registered on May 12, 2003. Currently, it has 183 members from different research fields and institutions all over Lithuania.

Our mission is to encourage young people to become world-class scientists by establishing interdisciplinary scientific community, promoting science and by facilitating improvements in the system of science and education.

Our goals:

- facilitate contacts among young scientists nationally and internationally, and to enhance the scope of their activities and possibilities;

- set up an open forum for valuable discussions, resulting in scientific and civil activities;

- propagate systemic exchange of scientific information and to conduct scientific research;

- contribute to improvement of the Lithuanian education system by actively participating in various interest working groups;

- act as the main lobby organisation on behalf of young scientists/researchers in Lithuania.

Since its foundation, LSYR participated in many projects and various activities like the following:

- Summer schools for pupils interested in research have been organized each summer starting from 2004.

- Annual science festival "Catch a New Sight" takes place in Kaunas, Lithuania at the end of school year. The festival is designed for general public, as it takes place in many streets of the town.

- In 2006, we organized international summer school “Scientific Presentation, Writing and Introduction to Society”. At the school, 20 young researchers (mostly PhD students) from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Moldova and Switzerland were trained to make scientific presentations to various groups of society.

- “Science career imitation 2007” project was organized in 2007. The main idea of the project was to show high school students how career in science can be more interesting than becoming a businessman or even Lithuania’s president.

- In 2007, we participated in preparation of the study “Analysis of science communication demands in Lithuania” ordered by Lithuanian Ministry of Education and Science.

- At this time, we participate in Lifelong Learning Programme Grundtvig “Let’s mix creativity and innovation in adult education” together with foreign partners from Austria, Poland, Italy and Spain.

- Our recent activities, like contest “The best PhD thesis of the year 2009”, a summer school “Smithy of Ideas 2009” and other events have been funded by the European Economic Area and financial Mechanism, and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.

- We collaborate with media (radio stations, magazines) on the regular basis in preparation of materials for science promotion.
